“Wade Hixton’s Counter Punch” is a boxing video game that uniquely blends sports action with a quirky storyline, developed by Inferno Games and Engine Software and published by Destination Software. Released for the Game Boy Advance, it first hit the North American market on March 16, 2004, followed by a European release on October 1, 2004. The game has drawn favorable comparisons to the classic “Punch-Out!!” series due to its engaging gameplay and distinctive style.
In this game, players step into the shoes of Wade Hixton, a mullet-sporting redneck with a penchant for fixing things with duct tape. The plot kicks off when Wade’s car breaks down in the peculiar town of Big Piney, leading to unexpected involvement in the local boxing scene as a means to pay for car repairs. To leave town, Wade must defeat a series of boxers, culminating in a battle against the local champion to earn enough money for his car repairs.
Gameplay involves navigating the town of Big Piney, where players can enter various locations that either initiate a fight or allow access to shops for purchasing moves or hiring help. Interaction with the town and its inhabitants is facilitated through a town map, with additional menus accessible for checking stats and challenges.
Boxing matches are central to gameplay, consisting of three 90-second rounds. Players and opponents have health meters, with successful punches depleting these meters. If a fighter’s health is entirely diminished, they fall and a knockout count begins. Players must rapidly press buttons to recover from knockdowns, and they can be knocked down up to four times before losing the ability to rise.
Strategic elements are woven throughout, including managing a Stamina meter that depleates with each blocked or dodged punch, impacting the ability to throw punches until recovered. Fighters also have a POW meter that, when filled, allows for powerful special attacks.
Winning matches earns players cash, potentially unlocks new areas and fighters, and enhances gameplay progression. While there’s no major penalty for losing a match other than statistical records and taunting from opponents, the competitive element encourages mastering boxing skills and strategic use of special techniques for success.
“Wade Hixton’s Counter Punch” offers a compelling mix of humor, challenge, and strategic depth, making it a memorable entry in the sports gaming genre on the Game Boy Advance.
