About This Game

“Shining Force II,” subtitled “The Ancient Seal,” is a tactical role-playing game developed by Sonic! Software Planning and published by Sega in 1993 for the Mega Drive/Genesis console. Although its storyline isn’t directly linked to the original “Shining Force,” both games are connected through the Game Gear title “Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict,” which bridges their plots. In “Shining Force II,” players take on the role of Bowie, the leader of the Shining Force. The game blends exploration and tactical battles beautifully. Outside of combat, players can explore towns, talk to NPCs, manage their party’s lineup and equipment, and seek out both visible and hidden treasures. Each character in the Shining Force has a unique background, personality, and class that dictates their abilities, weapons, and spells. Characters gain experience points through combat, which allows them to level up and improve their skills. When a character reaches level 20, they can be promoted to a higher class, enhancing their capabilities significantly. Some characters have access to a special promotion that requires a unique item found within the game. The narrative kicks off when a thief named Slade inadvertently unleashes a demon king, Zeon, by stealing the jewels of Light and Darkness from a shrine. The theft leads to chaos, including the sickness of King Granseal after a mysterious attack. Bowie, along with Sir Astral (the court adviser), Sarah the healer, and Chester the knight, begin to investigate these strange occurrences at the castle, encountering and battling demonic creatures known as Gizmos. As the story unfolds, Bowie and his companions find themselves in escalating conflicts involving possessed kings and military confrontations with neighboring kingdoms. The game’s plot thickens as they journey across the continent of Parmecia, gathering allies and solving the mystery of the jewels to ultimately confront and seal away Zeon once again. “Shining Force II” is celebrated for its deep tactical gameplay and rich storytelling, making it a standout title in the tactical RPG genre and a cherished classic among Sega Genesis enthusiasts.
